ISKCON East London and Essex Ratha Yatra – Festival of Chariots

About Ratha Yatra

Ratha Yatra, or the Festival of Chariots, is a joyous event celebrated for thousands of years in Jagannatha Puri. Lord Jagannatha (another name for Lord Krishna), along with His elder brother Baladeva and sister Subhadra Maharani, rides a gigantic chariot through the streets, blessing all souls.

Significance of Ratha Yatra

Pulling the ropes of the Lord’s chariot is said to bestow immense spiritual merit, burning sins and increasing devotion. Even touching the chariot or engaging others in service during the festival is spiritually uplifting.

Ratha Yatra in the Western World

Srila Prabhupada, ISKCON’s Founder-Acharya, had a vision of celebrating this festival globally. Beginning from his childhood, he enacted Ratha Yatra at age six, and later expanded it across continents through ISKCON.
